COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Drawing & Painting Mastery

Grades 4+      Saturdays 10am

In this transformative course, learners will embark on an artistic journey that spans the ages, drawing inspiration from historical and contemporary artists to create their own breathtaking masterpieces.

Classes will be introduced with a lesson on the historical development of painting & drawing techniques. Students will explore the works of renowned artists, finding inspiration in their brushstrokes and visionary creations.

The journey begins with an Introduction to mark-making and tonal value/shading, and learners are taught the fundamental techniques to create depth and dimension in their drawings. Students will delve into the art of rendering three-dimensional shapes on paper.

Learners will also venture into the realm of Perspective, where they’ll gain a deeper understanding of spatial relationships and visual depth. Lessons in shapes will unlock the ability to construct complex forms, and students will build upon their newfound skills to create stunning 3D landscapes. At the same time, students will master the art of mixing colors and delve into basic color theory, unlocking the secrets to crafting captivating palettes.

Layering becomes a powerful tool as learners delve into acrylic paint, breathing life into their creations with depth and form. Natural landscapes and organic forms will be brought to life on the canvas, capturing the beauty of the world around us. Expressive acrylic landscape painting will delve into the realm of impressionism, where emotions and moods take center stage. JUNIOR ENRICHMENTS

Junior Engineers – Motorized Vehicles

Grades 1 to 3 – Saturdays 10am

Learners explore the wonders of different modes of transportation, learning to create their own cars, boats, trains, and planes – complete with working motors and electrical circuits.

This course begins with the creation of motorized cars, focusing on two main questions: what makes something roll well, and how can motors propel cars? After mastering simple electrical circuits to power their cars, Learners move on to the increased challenge of constructing fan boats. With guidance from the instructor, Learners build a buoyant vessel and, using their knowledge of electric motors, propel it with a small fan. As they continue to gain confidence with their construction skills, the course moves into making trains, teaching Learners how to maximize the efficiency of their motorized vehicles. In the final section of the course, Learners take flight with planes, discovering the physics of Lift (the Bernoulli Effect). They apply their knowledge to a variety of small plane projects, competing with other Learners to make the aircraft that can fly fastest and furthest. By the end of the course, students will have greatly enhanced crafting skills, and will have specialized knowledge of applied physics and electrical circuitry. Learners can bring home their fun projects to astound family and friends.

Part 1 – Cars

Start your engines! In the first part of this exciting course, the focus is on cars. Through interactive and engaging activities, learners will delve into the fascinating mechanics of automobiles and the principles behind their functionality. 

Using age-appropriate educational tools and resources, our experienced instructors will guide learners through the exploration of car design, aerodynamics, and the various components that make cars go vroom! From wheels and axles to engines and steering, learners will develop a foundational understanding of how cars work.

Through hands-on experiments, group challenges, and stimulating discussions, our Junior Engineers will have the opportunity to test their own miniature cars. By testing their performance, and observing the effects of different design modifications, Learners will develop a thorough understanding of the engineering process (prototype > test > revise > repeat), and will also develop a comprehensive understanding of electric motors as a component of electrical circuitry. Participants will also learn about the importance of safety features, the impact of energy sources, and the significance of environmentally friendly transportation options. 

Part 2 – Boats Ahoy

Ahoy, young adventurers! In Part 2 of Junior Engineers – Vehicles, our learners set sail on a voyage of discovery as they delve into the captivating world of boats. From majestic sailboats to powerful speedboats, children will uncover the secrets behind these waterborne marvels.

Through captivating stories, hands-on experiments, and engaging demonstrations, our instructors will guide learners through the principles of buoyancy, water resistance, and navigation. They will gain an understanding of the different types of boats, their unique features, and the science that allows them to glide through the water.

Part 3 – Trains

All aboard! In Part 3 of Junior Engineers – Vehicles, young learners will be captivated by the world of trains. From steam engines to modern high-speed trains, children will discover the intricate workings behind these remarkable machines.

Junior Engineers – Launchers

Grades 1 to 3 – Saturdays 11am

Enrich your inner engineer with this exhilarating course where Learners create launchers to gain crafting skills and deepen their understanding of applied physics.

Working through a variety of projects, learners discover different ways to launch things. Beginning with torsion-powered devices, learners are taught how to construct different launching mechanisms with twisted rope. They move on to launchers that work with suspended weight, and our instructors explain the technical names and functions of each part (such as the ‘fulcrum’). After working with ancient launching techniques, learners begin constructing more modern launchers that use tiny springs, and the course concludes with the most modern launchers of all, using elasticity to send small objects flying. By the end of the course, learners will have an understanding of the engineering process in general, as well as deep understanding of different launching mechanisms.

Part 1 – Torsion

Inspired by ancient Roman ballistae and catapults, participants will embark on a journey of discovery as they explore the principles behind these incredible machines.

They will learn about the power of torsion and how it can be harnessed to launch objects through the air. Part 2 – Suspended Weight

In Part 2 of this Enrichment, young learners delve into the realm of suspended weight launchers. Inspired by the mighty trebuchets of old, participants will explore the mechanics and engineering principles behind these awe-inspiring machines.

Through engaging lessons, collaborative projects, and hands-on experimentation, our instructors will guide learners in designing and constructing their own trebuchets. They will discover the importance of counterweights, leverage, and projectile motion. Part 3 – Spring

In Part 3 of the Launchers course, young learners will learn the power of spring-loaded constructions. Using a variety of methods and techniques, participants will explore the power of springs and their applications in launching objects.

Through fun and interactive activities, our instructors will guide learners in constructing small spring-loaded launchers. They will discover the relationship between potential and kinetic energy, and learn how to harness the energy stored in springs. By experimenting with different designs and adjusting the tension, learners will gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind their creations.

Part 4 – Elastics

In the final part of of this Enrichment, learners will take their engineering skills to new heights as they explore elastic launchers. Participants will discover the power of elasticity and how it can be harnessed for exciting launches.

Through hands-on experiments, creative challenges, and guided instruction, our instructors will teach learners how to create small elastic launchers using various popular methods. They will learn about the properties of different materials, the concept of potential energy stored in stretched elastic bands, and the factors that influence the trajectory of launched objects. By designing and testing their own balloon launchers, learners will discover the importance of the engineering process and experience the thrill of engineering in action.

Drawing & Painting

Saturdays 11am-12pm

Learn how to draw and paint anything you can see or imagine! With this course from a fine arts master, you will discover the tricks and techniques of great artworks.

Your art will become more substantial through lessons on creating the illusion of depth and the feeling of weight. You will also learn about human proportions, enabling you to create realistic portraits and figures. Lessons also extend to the creation of textures (like fur and bricks) as well as landscape drawings, teaching participants how to create richly detailed worlds.

Each learner’s sketchbook will become a portfolio, documenting their progress with their increasingly impressive work. By the end of this course, you will stun your family and friends with your improved artistry.

Coding Apps for Mobile Devices

Make your own games and apps for phones and tablets!

In this course, learners are introduced to components of coding for mobile devices. They first learn how to add images and sounds, then learn how to make those elements interactive by coding the touch screen.

Learn how to create movement, animations, collisions, sound effects, and more. Bring your apps and games to life by coding awesome effects! Advanced projects include functions unique to mobile devices, using features like built-in cameras and tilt-sensors.

Past students have made games with ninjas fighting dragons, pets being nurtured, and famous characters in unusual circumstances. What will you make?

– Basic Literacy Skills

– Basic Computer Skills (mouse and keyboard)

* These skills can be improved throughout this course, but to begin, you should at least know how to read a sentence and type your name on a keyboard.
