How can you stay safe while navigating the internet? How will the rise of renewable energies affect the world economy? How can self-driving cars reduce commute time and traffic? These are questions that few would have asked 20 years ago and yet today they are at the forefront of our debates. The quickening pace of technological advancement, growing populations and ever greater global connections have created new problems and opportunities that the coming generation will have to navigate. These new realities will require thoughtful leadership, creative problem-solving and an innovative skill set. That is why Explorations fully embraces the teaching power of Problem Based Learning.
Our team of Activity Leaders (Certified teachers and Experts) is developing brand new curricula to meet the needs of our ever-changing world. Our goal is to empower the next generation of leaders with the tools they need to thrive in tomorrow’s world.
Problem Based Learning is defined as a child-centered approach where the children learn about a subject by solving open-ended, challenging problems. For example, instead of solving a traditional math problem about multiplication and division, campers are asked to develop their own business plan in which they design a product and forecast the costs, margins, and sales. This approach empowers children to think creatively about solutions, to use their tools to find the necessary information, to communicate effectively with their peers and to gain tangent skills. However, for us, what is most important about Problem Based Learning is that it shows kids that overcoming challenges is fun and fulfilling.
In the next few weeks, we will be releasing a series of posts that will delve deeper into how our team of Leaders will work with our campers to solve real problems and learn real skills.
