{"id":2047,"date":"2019-06-12T03:33:57","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T03:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorationscamp.ca\/?p=2047"},"modified":"2022-09-05T16:14:43","modified_gmt":"2022-09-05T16:14:43","slug":"unplug-to-connect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorationslearning.com\/fr\/2019\/06\/12\/unplug-to-connect\/","title":{"rendered":"Unplug to Connect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #535353;\">According to a recent article in The Washington Post entitled\u00a0\u201cTeens who spend less time in front of screens are happier\u201d, Silicon Valley executives \u201chave been speaking out about the purposefully addictive designs of smartphones and social media, which make them hard to put down for anyone, but particularly teenagers. Now, a new report puts numbers to the warnings by tying a sudden and large drop in adolescents\u2019 happiness with the proliferation of smartphones and finding that the more hours a day teens spend in front of screens, the less satisfied they are.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #535353;\">Why Unplug to Connect?<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">Recently, the Toronto Boys and Girls Club began their \u201cUnplug to Connect\u201d initiative, in response to this alarming research; \u201cTeenagers today have spent their entire adolescence in a world with smartphones, and the feeling of constantly being \u201cplugged in\u201d is having a significant impact on their overall happiness.\u00a0 While the internet and social media can be great resources for children and youth, it\u2019s also critical that they have space to unplug and engage with others in a meaningful way.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">An ongoing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #69b833;\">study<\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">\u00a0by the University of Michigan found that the more hours a week that adolescents spend using screens, the less happy they are. Even more disturbing, self-esteem, life satisfaction, and happiness among teens declined significantly after 2012, when smartphone ownership reached 50% in the United States.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">In response to these alarming trends, The Boys and Girls Club of Toronto have instituted their \u201cUnplug to Connect\u201d initiative with the following manifesto; \u201cWe understand that in order to be happy and healthy, children and youth need to be a part of a community where supportive relationships are fostered, and where they have the opportunity to explore the world around them. At Boys and Girls Clubs across the country, kids spend time away from smartphones and computers every single day\u2014playing together, learning together, and being mentored by caring adults.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">Beginning this summer, the Explorations Team are going to follow this example and heed the abundant research\u00a0that exists regarding overexposure and dependency issues related to compulsive, digital device usage.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">Our Campers will be encouraged to bring and use their digital devices\u00a0when engaged in scheduled activities that take advantage of technology. However, we will be establishing \u201cno-phone zones\u201d and \u201cunplug to connect\u201d places and times of the day to encourage camper interaction with one another.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">Campers will be encouraged to spend \u201cdown time\u201d together, without the intrusion of technology. They will be encouraged to participate in activities that will allow them to interact with their friends, and share the kind of experiences that can only happen when children put aside their phones and make time for real connection.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #535353;\">We will be establishing \u201cunplugging\u201d guidelines and advisories in the weeks to come, before the beginning of camp.
